First India entry; facility to scale to 1,200 employees, focus on AI, engineering and digital transformation

Hyderabad: The Government of Telangana on Monday announced the launch of the Global Technology Centre of The Hartford in Hyderabad, marking the US-based insurer’s first entry into India.

The 1,60,000 sq ft facility, located in the Financial District, was inaugurated by Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, Industries and Legislative Affairs. The centre is expected to scale to nearly 1,200 employees over the next few years as it expands advanced digital, engineering and AI-led capabilities for the organisation globally.

The new centre will support The Hartford’s enterprise-wide technology transformation journey with a focus on artificial intelligence, digital innovation and engineering excellence. Designed to operate in a start-up-like environment, it will enable rapid prototyping, agile development and seamless cross-time-zone collaboration with the company’s technology hubs in Hartford, Charlotte, Chicago and Columbus.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad has consistently been the preferred landing point for global majors expanding into India.

“The Hartford’s decision to begin its India journey in Hyderabad follows a familiar pattern. When Microsoft expanded beyond the United States, their first major development centre outside the US was built here. When Google entered India, they chose Hyderabad and created their largest campus outside Mountain View. In recent years, global leaders like McDonald’s, Vanguard, Dai-ichi Life and Marriott International have also made Hyderabad their landing point in India,” he said.

He added that Hyderabad measures its success by the impact it helps global institutions create and welcomed The Hartford as a partner in building the next chapter of digital innovation.

During the visit, the minister toured the facility and interacted with The Hartford’s leadership team, including Morris Tooker, president; Claire Burns, chief marketing and communications officer; Shekar Pannala, chief information officer; Surya Thammiraju, managing director and head of Hartford India; Imran Malik, chief technology officer; and Lori Rodden, chief human resources officer. The team briefed him on the centre’s operating model, talent roadmap and plans to build deep engineering and AI capabilities from Hyderabad.

Shekar Pannala said the Hyderabad centre would play a strategic role in shaping the company’s digital future.

“The true strength of The Hartford has always been its people. By building on our world-class workforce with this technology center in Hyderabad, we are not only creating new digital and AI capabilities but also shaping the future of insurance technology. This center will be a magnet for talent in India – a place where engineering excellence and unified purpose drive innovation at scale,” he said.

Hyderabad’s strong engineering talent base, consistent governance framework and established global trust position it as a dependable hub for high-value technology and innovation. As insurance evolves into a data-driven science powered by advanced analytics, climate intelligence and predictive modelling, the new centre is expected to strengthen The Hartford’s global transformation roadmap.
