New Delhi, August 13: The Ministry of Home Affairs has released 25 years of registered birth statistics in India, drawn from the Civil Registration System (CRS) under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. The data, compiled by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, provides state-wise and national totals from 1998 to 2022.

According to the report, India’s registered births have increased significantly over the years, climbing from 1,18,93,946 in 1998 to 2,54,39,164 in 2022. The statistics cover all states and union territories, with adjustments for the creation of new states and data gaps in specific years.

The citizenship framework in India, the Ministry noted, is governed under the Citizenship Act, 1955, which outlines acquisition by birth, descent, registration, naturalization, or incorporation of territory.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Tuesday shared the data in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, underlining the role of the CRS in producing the annual Vital Statistics of India report, which informs policy decisions on population, health, and governance.
