New Delhi, August 13: More than 1.11 crore hypertension cases and 64 lakh diabetes cases have been diagnosed and are actively under treatment across India between January and June 2025, according to the Union Health Ministry. The figures were shared by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The achievements come under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), part of the National Health Mission (NHM), which supports states and union territories in strengthening infrastructure, human resources, screening, early diagnosis, referral, treatment, and health promotion. The initiative has established 770 district NCD clinics, 233 cardiac care units, and 6,410 NCD clinics at community health centre level.

A population-based screening programme targets individuals aged 30 years and above. The Health Ministry also launched a nationwide NCD screening campaign from 20 February to 31 March 2025, aiming for universal screening of this age group.

Patients diagnosed under the programme receive free medicines, regular follow-ups through the NCD portal, lifestyle counselling, and referral to specialised care when needed. Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) conduct risk assessments using the Community Based Assessment Checklist (CBAC), while Community Health Officers (CHOs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) provide counselling on diet, physical activity, and cessation of tobacco and alcohol use.

The Ministry noted that these measures are designed to promote early detection, improve treatment adherence, and reduce the burden of lifestyle-related diseases across the country.
