Mumbai: Mercedes-Benz India has launched the S 450e Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), marking the first time the iconic S-Class limousine is being offered with plug-in hybrid technology in the country. The company said the new model combines electric mobility with flagship luxury, creating a new benchmark in India’s top-end luxury car segment.
Priced at ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom) for the Launch Edition and starting from ₹2.38 crore (ex-showroom) for the MANUFAKTUR Edition, the new S 450e introduces Mercedes-Benz’s first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain in its flagship sedan lineup in India. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from the fourth quarter of 2026, with bookings now open.
The luxury sedan is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine paired with a 120 kW electric motor. Together, the system produces a combined output of 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.7 seconds.
A key highlight of the S 450e is its 22 kWh lithium-ion battery, which delivers a pure electric driving range of approximately 115 kilometres (WLTP), allowing most daily urban commutes to be completed without engaging the petrol engine.
Speaking on the launch, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the introduction of the S 450e reflects the company’s flexible, powertrain-agnostic strategy and responds to growing demand for plug-in hybrid technology among luxury car buyers.
“The S-Class embodies Mercedes-Benz’s extraordinary legacy of timeless luxury. Bringing a PHEV to the S-Class for the first time in India reflects our commitment to offering customers greater flexibility with ICE, BEV and PHEV powertrain options,” he said.
Mercedes-Benz said more than 2,700 components in the new S-Class have been newly developed, updated or refined, making it the most comprehensively updated S-Class within a single generation.
Among the notable upgrades are the new DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps featuring micro-LED technology, a larger illuminated grille, redesigned tail lamps, and the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) that powers the vehicle’s digital ecosystem.
The sedan also features the latest MBUX infotainment system with AI-powered voice assistance, Google Maps-based navigation, and the MBUX Superscreen for an enhanced digital user experience.
In terms of ride comfort, the S 450e comes equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension and rear-axle steering as standard, helping improve manoeuvrability and passenger comfort. The rear-wheel steering system can be upgraded from 4.5 degrees to 10 degrees, significantly reducing the turning circle.
Safety remains a cornerstone of the S-Class. For the first time in India, the vehicle is equipped with 15 airbags, along with Mercedes-Benz’s advanced PRE-SAFE® occupant protection technologies and adaptive restraint systems.
The launch strengthens Mercedes-Benz India’s electrification strategy while expanding customer choice in the luxury segment. The company now offers internal combustion, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains across its portfolio, enabling buyers to choose technologies best suited to their driving requirements.
