New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday released two strategic documents on Bharat Innovates, an initiative aimed at showcasing India’s emerging innovation and startup ecosystem rooted in higher education and research institutions. The initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to transform India from a knowledge-consuming nation into a knowledge-creating and innovation-driven economy.

The event was attended by Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India Ajay Kumar Sood, Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, School Education and Literacy Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Atal Innovation Mission Mission Director Deepak Bagla, Joint Secretary (Technical Education) Saumya Gupta and other senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan said Bharat Innovates reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of taking India’s innovation capabilities to the global stage and is aligned with the broader goal of building an innovation-led Viksit Bharat. He noted that many of the startups featured in the strategic documents have emerged from premier institutions, incubators and research ecosystems across the country, demonstrating the growing innovation capacity of India’s higher education sector.

The minister highlighted that Bharat Innovates is creating opportunities for Indian startups to engage with global investment firms managing more than $3 trillion in assets and representing over 12,000 investments worldwide. He said the initiative is expected to bring together more than 100 global investors and leading institutions, reflecting increasing international confidence in India’s deep-tech and innovation ecosystem.

Pradhan also underlined the contribution of academic institutions to the country’s innovation landscape. He said institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and BITS Pilani will showcase key research and innovation projects under Bharat Innovates, highlighting the role of academia-led innovation in national development.

Bharat Innovates 2026 is scheduled to be inaugurated jointly by Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron on June 14 in Nice. The event is expected to bring together 120 Indian innovators, around 15 higher education institutions and more than 500 investors, venture capital firms, global CEOs and industry leaders across sectors including semiconductors, biotechnology, healthcare, advanced computing, energy and manufacturing.

The government expects the initiative to strengthen international collaboration in deep technology, research and development, startup scaling and cross-border investment while positioning India as a leading global hub for innovation-driven growth and entrepreneurship.
