HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called for support for Rahul Gandhi in the next general election, saying the Congress leader becoming Prime Minister would advance the empowerment of the country’s majority “Bahujan” communities.

Addressing Pandaga Sayanna Mudiraj’s birth anniversary celebrations in Hyderabad on Thursday, Revanth Reddy said his government would constitute a Cabinet subcommittee to examine the proposed reclassification of the Mudiraj community from BC-D to BC-A.

He said the matter would be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting. Inadequate data had held up reclassification, he said, adding that the study must also address concerns raised by other communities about the proposal.

Revanth Reddy asked Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar to take up the allocation of an MLC ticket to a Mudiraj representative with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud.

The Chief Minister cited the political opportunities given to Vakiti Srihari and Neelam Madhu as examples of Congress representation for the community. He said ensuring its participation in government was his responsibility.

Referring to the state’s caste survey, Revanth Reddy urged communities to submit supporting details if they believed their population figures had been recorded incorrectly. He said the exercise had provided communities with a stronger basis to articulate their demands.

The Chief Minister said political empowerment of Backward Classes remained a priority for his government. He also highlighted welfare measures, including the supply of fine rice to 3.48 crore people and the construction of Indiramma houses.

He said his administration was continuing welfare programmes introduced by successive governments, including those led by N.T. Rama Rao, N. Chandrababu Naidu, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and K. Chandrashekar Rao.

Revanth Reddy announced that statues of Pandaga Sayanna and Doddi Komaraiah would be installed on Hyderabad’s Tank Bund. Remembering Chakali Ailamma, Gaddar and Ande Sri, he acknowledged their contributions to Telangana’s social and cultural life.

Paying tribute to Sayanna, the Chief Minister recalled his resistance to feudal oppression and support for poor families. Songs commemorating his struggle continued to be sung during sowing and harvesting, he said.
