DoT’s TTDF scheme supports indigenous telecom R&D and next-generation connectivity roadmap

New Delhi: India has approved 104 research projects worth ₹271 crore to support the development of 6G technology, as part of efforts to strengthen indigenous telecom research and innovation, the government informed Parliament.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said the government has released the Bharat 6G Vision document, outlining the country’s roadmap for research, development and deployment of 6G networks.

The government has also published a spectrum roadmap for 6G services, providing visibility on spectrum availability, technology development and deployment timelines over the next decade. The roadmap divides development into three phases — short term (2025–2026), medium term (2027–2030) and long term (2031–2035) — to support advanced 6G applications.

Research on 6G technologies is also being undertaken through global collaboration. Studies are currently being conducted at international forums such as the International Telecommunication Union, which has issued frameworks and reports outlining potential use cases and technology architectures for IMT-2030 (6G).

These reports examine areas including spectrum feasibility, propagation characteristics, antenna technologies, deployment architectures and other enabling technologies for future mobile communication systems.

To strengthen domestic innovation, the department of telecommunications is supporting indigenous telecom research through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme. The programme provides financial and institutional support to academia, start-ups, research institutions and industry working on emerging telecom technologies.

As of February 2026, the government has approved 104 projects focused on 6G research under the TTDF scheme, aimed at supporting the development of testbeds, advanced communication systems and commercialization of next-generation telecom technologies.

The initiatives are part of India’s broader strategy to become a global leader in the design, development and deployment of 6G technologies in the coming decade.
