New Delhi, August 24: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday announced that the Mumbai Port Authority has allotted a four-bigha land parcel at Colaba, Mumbai, on lease to the Assam government for 60 years. The move is aimed at enabling the northeastern state to develop people-centric infrastructure in healthcare, education, and social welfare.

The allotment follows a request from the Assam Chief Secretary to the Union Ministry seeking land in Mumbai for a dedicated centre to serve the long-term needs of the state’s citizens. Sonowal said the decision reflects the Modi government’s commitment to support Assam’s growth journey.

“This is a people-first initiative. By making this land available for 60 years, we are enabling the creation of critical infrastructure that will serve generations to come. Located in the heart of Mumbai, the project will meet the aspirations of the people of Assam — whether patients, students, or entrepreneurs,” the Union Minister said.

Sonowal added that he had discussed the development with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who welcomed the move and termed it a vital contribution to the state’s growth story.

While detailed project plans are under consideration, officials said the facilities could include healthcare centres, hostels for students, social service hubs, and even an incubation centre for entrepreneurs. The long-term lease ensures flexibility for sustainable projects aligned with Assam’s priorities.

Highlighting the broader vision, Sonowal said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always emphasised that the Northeast must become a powerhouse of growth, driven by empowerment of its people. Today’s decision is another step towards that vision of an inclusive and sustainable Atmanirbhar Northeast. With Mumbai as a financial hub, this land will also give Assam’s entrepreneurs access to opportunities in the maximum city.”

The Colaba land allotment is expected to strengthen Assam’s presence in Mumbai and provide critical support infrastructure for citizens of the state residing in or traveling to the city.
