DUMBUR, TRIPURA: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the ₹450 crore Matabari Tourism Circuit at Narkel Kunja near Dumbur Lake, giving a major boost to tourism-led development in Tripura.
Chief Minister Manik Saha joined the programme virtually, while Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury was present at the venue. During his three-day visit to the state, Scindia announced development projects worth a total of ₹750 crore, spanning tourism, infrastructure and agro-based sectors.
Addressing the gathering, Scindia said the Matabari Tourism Circuit would integrate the Tripura Sundari Temple, Chabimura and Dumbur Lake, positioning Tripura prominently on the global map of spiritual and eco-tourism. Of the total project outlay, ₹276 crore is being contributed by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
The project will feature floating jetties, eco-friendly resorts, modern tourist facilities and immersive experiences rooted in local culture, giving the Dumbur region a distinct international tourism identity.
Scindia said the initiative would generate 4,000–5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, with nearly 30 percent participation by women. Self-help groups and local youth will be actively integrated into tourism-related activities. He added that the project would focus equally on infrastructure and human resource development, with tour guides to be trained at premier institutions.
Highlighting the pristine beauty of Dumbur Lake, Scindia described the region as a rare confluence of nature, culture and spirituality. He said the warmth, simplicity and hospitality of the people of Tripura would play a key role in establishing the state as a global tourism destination.
Scindia said Tripura’s transformation reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of Developed Northeast, Local to Global and the Act East Policy, positioning the state as a gateway to Southeast Asia. He noted that strong Centre–State coordination under the leadership of Manik Saha has accelerated development across sectors.
During the visit, the Union Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth ₹220 crore in roads, healthcare, education and solar micro-grids. He also laid the foundation stone for an ₹80 crore agarwood value chain project aimed at increasing farmers’ incomes and enabling direct access to international markets.
Scindia expressed confidence that Tripura will emerge as a self-reliant state through tourism, agarwood, bamboo and infrastructure development. He added that 22 projects have been approved to promote engineered bamboo in the Northeast under the Green Gold initiative, strengthening the regional economy while advancing sustainable development.
