New Delhi: India’s wind energy sector, a critical pillar of the country’s renewable energy mix, recorded its highest-ever annual capacity addition of 6.1 GW in FY 2025–26, signalling accelerated momentum in the clean energy transition.

Announcing the milestone, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said India now has an installed wind energy capacity of over 56.1 GW, with an additional 28 GW under implementation, placing the country among the top global wind energy producers.

The minister said the government is targeting 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036, aligning with India’s broader commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

Highlighting the sector’s strategic importance, he noted that wind energy complements solar power by generating nearly 45% of its output during peak demand hours, particularly in the evening and night, thereby enhancing grid stability.

The government has introduced several policy measures to support the sector, including a dedicated wind component under Renewable Purchase Obligations, enforcement of Late Payment Surcharge rules, transparent bidding frameworks, and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) to promote domestic manufacturing.

Officials said India has developed a strong manufacturing ecosystem with an annual capacity exceeding 24 GW and indigenisation levels of 70–80%, supported by a robust supply chain across components such as blades, towers and gearboxes.

The government is also focusing on hybrid renewable projects combining wind, solar and storage, along with expansion of transmission infrastructure under the Green Energy Corridor to improve grid integration.

Efforts are underway to address industry concerns related to curtailment, transmission delays and regulatory mechanisms, while new financing models such as blended finance and Contracts for Difference (CfD) are being explored to enhance investment flows and revenue stability.

Industry observers note that as global supply chains diversify, India has the opportunity to emerge as a major manufacturing and export hub for wind energy equipment.

The minister said sustained policy support, industry participation and innovation will be key to achieving the country’s ambitious wind energy targets and strengthening its position in the global clean energy landscape.
