Coal Ministry launches sector-wide CSR framework; CIL milestones cross 1050 transplants
Coal India’s flagship CSR programmes have crossed 1,050 bone marrow transplants and 1,500 corrective heart surgeries as the Coal Ministry launches a new sector-wide CSR framework.
The framework was launched at an event in New Delhi in the presence of Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey, Coal Ministry Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt and senior officials, medical experts and beneficiary families.
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited (CIL) on Tuesday launched the first sector-wide CSR framework for Indian coal companies while highlighting major healthcare milestones achieved through two flagship initiatives benefiting children with serious medical conditions.
The framework was launched at an event in New Delhi in the presence of Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey, Coal Ministry Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt and senior officials, medical experts and beneficiary families.
Over 1,050 bone marrow transplants
The Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY), launched to support children suffering from Thalassemia and Aplastic Anaemia, has expanded from four hospitals initially to 21 empanelled hospitals across the country.
Under the scheme, up to ₹10 lakh is provided per patient directly to empanelled hospitals for bone marrow transplantation. With a total outlay of ₹130 crore across four phases, more than 1,050 bone marrow transplants have been completed so far.
The programme is implemented in coordination with Thalassemics India, with monitoring guidance from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
1,500 cardiac surgeries completed
CIL’s Nanha Sa Dil initiative focuses on children with congenital heart defects. The programme, launched in Jharkhand in March 2024, has since been expanded through CIL subsidiaries SECL, CCL, NCL and WCL.
More than two lakh children have been screened using modern diagnostic tools, while over 1,500 corrective cardiac surgeries have been completed free of cost, including travel and hospitalisation expenses.
Focus on outcome-oriented CSR
The new Comprehensive CSR Framework for Indian Coal Companies has been prepared by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs. The Ministry described it as the first sector-specific CSR framework since statutory CSR provisions came into effect under the Companies Act, 2013.
The framework seeks to make CSR interventions more structured, transparent and outcome-oriented, particularly for communities living in coal-mining areas.
Kishan Reddy highlighted CIL’s sustained CSR efforts in healthcare, education, livelihoods and community development, while stressing the need for a whole-of-society approach to support children affected by Thalassemia and congenital heart disease.
The event also featured the release of a book on TBSY, screening of films on CIL’s healthcare initiatives and felicitation of doctors and other stakeholders.
