Centre Approves ₹2169 Crore Ahmedabad Metro Extension Connecting Airport
With the completion of the new corridor, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational routes.
The new stations will be Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a ₹2,169 crore extension that will connect the city’s metro network to Ahmedabad Airport and strengthen urban mobility across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
The project, approved by the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will add a 6.032-km corridor with five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station. The new stations will be Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport.
With the completion of the new corridor, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational routes.
The government said the extension is designed to provide seamless airport connectivity while linking key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient public transport access. The project will also integrate with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro corridor, improving connectivity across the urban region.
Officials noted that the enhanced transport infrastructure would support future requirements arising from major international sporting events, including the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030, for which sports infrastructure is expected to be developed in the vicinity.
The metro extension is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion by offering an efficient alternative to road transport, particularly for airport-bound passengers. Authorities believe the project will improve travel times, enhance road safety and ease pressure on the city’s road network.
The government also highlighted the environmental benefits of the expansion, stating that increased metro usage would help reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based transport and lower carbon emissions in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region.
From an economic perspective, improved connectivity to the airport, railway stations and bus terminals is expected to enhance productivity, facilitate business growth and attract investments to areas that currently have limited transport access.
The project is also expected to generate employment, creating approximately 2,000 jobs during peak construction activity and around 500 jobs during operation and maintenance.
Officials said the metro expansion would contribute to more equitable access to public transport, benefiting people across socio-economic groups while improving access to jobs, education and essential services.
The government described Phase 2(A) as a transformative addition to Ahmedabad’s transport infrastructure and a key component of the city’s long-term sustainable urban development strategy.
