New Delhi: Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹285.01-crore project to upgrade the electric traction infrastructure on the Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section of South Central Railway, aiming to enhance train operations and increase capacity on one of the country’s busy rail corridors.

Under the project, the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system will be upgraded to a modern 2×25 kV system across an approximately 141-route-km stretch. The upgraded system is expected to provide a more stable and efficient power supply for train operations, improving reliability, safety and operational efficiency.

The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section forms part of the Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer corridor, a key High-Density Network (HDN) route that handles substantial passenger and freight traffic.

According to the Railways, the project is part of a broader effort to strengthen capacity on congested rail corridors and prepare the network for future growth in both passenger and freight movement.

The introduction of the 2×25 kV traction system is expected to support higher train loads, improve operational performance and ensure smoother train services on the route. Freight transportation is also expected to become more efficient, helping increase the speed and carrying capacity of goods trains.

Railway officials said the project would contribute to strengthening regional trade and industrial activity by improving logistics efficiency and rail connectivity.

The upgrade forms part of Indian Railways’ ongoing modernisation programme aimed at developing a future-ready rail network capable of meeting growing transportation demands while delivering better services to passengers and industry.
