Chandigarh: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the upgraded Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) 2.0 App to enhance monitoring, coordination, and implementation of the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).

The app was unveiled at the Chintan Shivir in Chandigarh by Governor of Punjab & Administrator of Chandigarh Gulab Chand Kataria and Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar, marking a significant step in leveraging digital governance tools to combat substance abuse.

Launched originally on August 15, 2020, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan has expanded from 272 vulnerable districts to cover all districts across India since August 2023. The campaign has so far reached over 26 crore people, including more than 9.5 crore youth and 6.47 crore women, through over 8.3 lakh awareness activities nationwide.

The NMBA 2.0 App is designed as a centralized digital platform for states, districts, institutions, and other stakeholders to enable near real-time reporting, monitoring, and coordination. It also supports onboarding and management of volunteers – known as Nasha Mukti Mitras – and provides access to IEC (Information, Education and Communication) resources.

A key enhancement in the upgraded version is its expanded accessibility to citizens. Users can now take e-pledges, access awareness materials, locate nearby de-addiction centres, and connect to helpline services including mental health and substance abuse support.

The platform also introduces role-based access for Grant-in-Aid Institutions (GIAs), allowing them to report activities and track grant (Anudan) status in real time. This is expected to improve transparency, accountability, and fund utilisation.

Additional features include a feedback mechanism for public input and a “nearest de-addiction centre” locator to facilitate quicker access to treatment services.

The government said the launch reinforces its commitment to strengthening institutional mechanisms and adopting technology-driven approaches to address substance abuse, improve outreach, and ensure effective implementation of drug demand reduction programmes across the country.
