Chandigarh: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the SMILE–Beggary Survey Mobile Application to enhance real-time data collection and monitoring under its rehabilitation programme for persons engaged in begging.

The application was unveiled during the Chintan Shivir with states and Union Territories held in Chandigarh from April 24 to 26. Developed under the SMILE–Beggary Sub-Scheme – focused on comprehensive rehabilitation – the app aims to digitize field-level surveys and improve accuracy, transparency, and timeliness of reporting.

Designed for use by implementing agencies and district authorities, the platform enables seamless capture of survey data, addressing longstanding challenges such as delays and inconsistencies in reporting. The move is expected to significantly strengthen the ministry’s ability to track performance, analyse data, and monitor outcomes across cities.

The ministry highlighted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of achieving a “Bhiksha Vritti Mukt Bharat,” or a begging-free India. By leveraging technology, the ministry aims to reinforce institutional mechanisms that support rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals into mainstream society.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to using digital tools to improve governance outcomes, with the new application expected to play a key role in ensuring dignity, social inclusion, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for beneficiaries under the scheme.
