Hyderabad: Southwest Airlines, one of the largest airlines in the United States, has launched its first Global Innovation Centre outside the US in Hyderabad, further reinforcing Telangana’s emergence as a major global hub for aviation technology, enterprise innovation and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

The new facility, launched through Southwest Airlines India, was inaugurated on Wednesday by Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, Industries & Commerce and Legislative Affairs, Government of Telangana.

The development marks a significant milestone not only for Hyderabad’s GCC ecosystem but also for India’s growing role in the global aviation technology value chain. Southwest Airlines’ decision to establish its first overseas innovation centre in Hyderabad comes amid increasing global interest in India’s engineering, AI and digital operations talent base.

According to the company, the Hyderabad centre will scale to more than 1,000 high-skilled engineers and technology professionals over the coming years. The facility will focus on areas such as AI/ML, deeptech, cybersecurity, digital engineering, data science, enterprise platforms, digital operations and next-generation product development.

During the inauguration, Telangana government officials met senior Southwest Airlines executives including Lauren Woods and Krishna Kallepalli to discuss long-term expansion plans and Hyderabad’s role in the future of aviation technology and enterprise transformation.

Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad had steadily evolved from an aviation infrastructure centre into a broader aerospace, defence, space-tech and deeptech innovation ecosystem.

“Southwest Airlines’ decision to establish its Global Innovation Centre here further reflects Hyderabad’s strategic importance in shaping the future of global mobility, aviation engineering, aerospace, and next-generation technology innovation,” he said.

The announcement also highlights a broader trend of multinational corporations increasingly choosing Hyderabad for first-of-their-kind global innovation centres in India. Over the last year, companies including BASF, Vanguard, Marriott International, HCA Healthcare and The Hartford have expanded or established innovation and GCC operations in Hyderabad.

Industry observers say Hyderabad is increasingly positioning itself as a specialised aviation, travel and hospitality technology hub, with companies such as American Airlines and Marriott already operating major technology centres in the city.

Lauren Woods said Hyderabad offered one of the world’s deepest talent pools in analytics, engineering and innovation.

“The Hyderabad Office allows Southwest Airlines to advance our vision by furthering our efforts to build critical business and technology skills,” she said.

Krishna Kallepalli said the centre would support Southwest Airlines’ global operations by building capabilities across AI, next-generation engineering and enterprise technology systems.

According to Telangana government data, Hyderabad now hosts over 450 GCCs employing more than 1.35 lakh professionals across sectors including technology, aerospace, semiconductors, healthcare, mobility and advanced engineering.

With global airlines increasingly transforming into technology-driven enterprises, Southwest Airlines’ Hyderabad investment signals how India’s GCC ecosystem is evolving beyond back-office operations into core innovation, digital engineering and operational intelligence functions.
