NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged researchers, industry leaders and startup founders to set concrete three-year targets for developing technologies, prototypes and products, while citing ₹24,000 crore in research and development commitments over the past year.

Addressing the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave 2026 at Bharat Mandapam on October 27, Modi said government commitments of ₹12,000 crore for market-ready laboratory technologies had been matched by private investors, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

He called for greater self-reliance in critical technologies, including semiconductors, quantum technologies, biotechnology, robotics, clean energy and next-generation communications.

On artificial intelligence, Modi said productivity gains should strengthen independent scientific thinking. Researchers must retain responsibility for checking answers and validating findings, he said.

He also called for AI-based and quantum security solutions to address emerging threats to financial networks and national security.

Modi said research should improve healthcare, agriculture, education and disaster resilience, and urged participants to translate the conclave’s discussions into measurable outcomes.
