New Delhi: The Centre’s flagship social security initiatives — Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — have completed 11 years, recording combined enrolments of more than 94 crore beneficiaries and significantly expanding India’s social security coverage.
According to the Ministry of Finance, cumulative enrolments under PMJJBY crossed 27.43 crore as of April 29, 2026, while PMSBY enrolments exceeded 58.09 crore. The Atal Pension Yojana has enrolled more than 9.04 crore subscribers till April 30, 2026.
The ministry said claims worth ₹21,512.50 crore have been disbursed under PMJJBY for over 10.75 lakh claims, while PMSBY has settled claims amounting to ₹3,667.52 crore covering 1,84,662 claims.
Launched on May 9, 2015, the Jan Suraksha schemes were designed to provide affordable insurance and pension coverage to economically vulnerable and underserved sections of society.
Finanace Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the schemes have helped broaden India’s insurance and pension landscape by shielding citizens from financial uncertainties and improving long-term resilience. She noted that more than 27 crore, 58 crore, and 9 crore enrolments have been achieved under PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY respectively.
The Finance Minister stated that PMJJBY alone has settled claims worth over ₹21,500 crore benefiting more than 10.7 lakh families, while PMSBY has disbursed nearly ₹3,660 crore to over 1.84 lakh families.
Pankaj Chaudhary said digitisation and simplification of enrolment and claims processes have strengthened the outreach and effectiveness of the schemes. He added that the launch of the online Jan Suraksha Portal has enabled citizens to enrol conveniently without visiting bank branches or post offices, while digital claims processing has accelerated settlement timelines.
PMJJBY provides life insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh for death due to any reason at an annual premium of ₹436 for individuals aged 18–50 years. PMSBY offers accidental death and disability coverage of up to ₹2 lakh at a premium of ₹20 per year for individuals aged 18–70 years.
Under APY, subscribers receive guaranteed monthly pensions ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after the age of 60, depending on contribution levels. The scheme is targeted primarily at workers in the unorganised sector.
The ministry also highlighted growing participation of women under the schemes. As of April 2026, PMJJBY recorded 12.72 crore female enrolments, while PMSBY registered 27.45 crore female beneficiaries. Women account for nearly 49 percent of total APY enrolments.
