New Delhi, June 9: The Government e-Marketplace (GeM), India’s flagship public procurement platform, has emerged as a key pillar of the country’s digital governance architecture, with procurement through the portal crossing ₹8.69 lakh crore and total orders surpassing 2.17 crore since its launch in 2016.

Marking nearly a decade of operations, GeM has transformed government procurement from a largely manual and fragmented system into a transparent, technology-driven marketplace, enabling wider participation by businesses across the country while improving efficiency and accountability in public spending.

According to official data, the number of registered micro and small enterprises (MSEs) on the platform has grown from just 2,396 in 2016-17 to more than 11.9 lakh. Procurement from MSEs has increased dramatically from ₹69 crore during the platform’s initial year to over ₹8.69 lakh crore, reflecting the growing adoption of digital procurement across government departments and agencies.

The platform has also witnessed significant growth in participation from women entrepreneurs, startups and SC/ST-owned enterprises.

Registered women-owned MSEs on GeM have risen from 268 to more than 2.16 lakh, while procurement from these enterprises has expanded from ₹8 crore to over ₹93,327 crore. Startup participation has increased from 88 entities to more than 40,000, with procurement through the segment exceeding ₹61,400 crore.

Similarly, the number of registered SC/ST-owned MSEs has grown from 38 to over 66,000, with procurement value crossing ₹21,800 crore, underscoring GeM’s role in promoting inclusive economic participation.

Officials said the platform has contributed to improving the Ease of Doing Business by simplifying access to government procurement opportunities through online vendor onboarding, transparent bidding systems, digital contract management and end-to-end electronic procurement processes.

Beyond procurement, GeM has played an important role in supporting public service delivery, particularly in the healthcare sector. The platform facilitated the procurement of more than 324 crore vaccine doses and 199 crore syringes, besides enabling purchases of diagnostic equipment, medical kits for Vande Bharat trains and various healthcare supplies.

Technology remains central to GeM’s evolution. The platform is increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence tools, advanced analytics, digital monitoring systems and transparent auction mechanisms to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen accountability and improve user experience.

Mihir Kumar, CEO of GeM, said the platform has helped create a transparent and inclusive procurement ecosystem while expanding opportunities for enterprises across sectors.

“GeM has enabled participation of MSEs, startups and local manufacturers in government procurement through a structured and transparent digital framework. It has strengthened public service delivery while creating new economic opportunities for businesses across the country,” he said.

As India advances towards its Viksit Bharat vision, GeM is expected to play an increasingly important role in connecting government demand with local enterprises, supporting initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and fostering greater participation by startups, women entrepreneurs, cooperatives and rural enterprises in public procurement.
