New Delhi: The Government of India has expanded field operations for the Houselisting and Housing Census under Phase I of Census 2027 to five more states and Union Territories, while the newly introduced Self-Enumeration facility has crossed 1.44 crore households nationwide.
According to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, field operations commenced on Saturday in Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) area in Delhi as part of the nationwide Census exercise.
House-to-house houselisting operations by enumerators are already underway in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana and Uttarakhand.
The Self-Enumeration facility has now been launched in Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Puducherry and will remain open till May 31. Field-level houselisting operations in these regions will begin from June 1 and continue till June 30.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Self-Enumeration process is currently active till May 21, after which physical houselisting operations will be conducted from May 22 to June 20.
Earlier, the Houselisting and Housing Census operations conducted between April 16 and May 15 were completed in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim, along with the NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board areas in the national capital.
The government said the Self-Enumeration facility, introduced for the first time in Census operations, has received an encouraging response across the country. More than 1.44 crore households have completed the process through the official portal.
Officials described the initiative as a major step towards digitisation of Census operations, allowing residents to participate through a secure online platform while reducing dependence on paper-based data collection.
Residents who complete Self-Enumeration are required to share the generated Self-Enumeration ID with enumerators during field visits to complete the Houselisting and Housing Census process. Households that do not opt for online enumeration will continue to be covered through physical visits by enumerators.
Census 2027 is being conducted using digital tools for the first time while retaining the traditional door-to-door enumeration model. Enumerators are collecting data using a dedicated mobile application during field visits.
The first phase of the Census includes collection of information related to housing conditions, household details, amenities and assets through a structured questionnaire comprising 33 notified questions.
The government reiterated that all data collected under the Census Act, 1948 remains strictly confidential and is used only for statistical and development planning purposes.
