New Delhi: Jubilant celebrations swept across the country on Sunday night as India clinched the ICC men’s T20 World Cup, triggering spontaneous festivities in cities, towns and villages with cricket fans pouring onto the streets waving the national flag, bursting crackers and chanting slogans in praise of the team.
India produced a dominant performance in the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first after New Zealand opted to field, India posted a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, powered by an explosive 89 off 46 balls from Sanju Samson and a rapid start from Abhishek Sharma. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs as Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell of 4/15. Former India captain Virat Kohli congratulated the Indian team on their historic ICC men’s T20 World Cup triumph, praising the side for playing “explosive cricket” throughout the tournament and asserting that no team could match their intensity and attacking approach. Kohli said the victory reflected the team’s fearless brand of cricket and collective determination, and also lauded standout performer Sanju Samson, calling his Player of the Tournament award “most well-deserved” after a series of match-winning performances.
