President’s Republic Day eve address underscores constitutional ideals; PM calls it a call to strengthen democracy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the address inspires citizens to uphold constitutional values and build a Viksit Bharat

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the Republic Day eve address delivered by President Droupadi Murmu, describing it as inspiring and deeply rooted in the spirit of the Constitution.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the President had aptly highlighted the uniqueness of India’s Constitution and the collective spirit that has carried the nation forward. He noted that the address motivates citizens to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening democracy, upholding constitutional ideals and building a Viksit Bharat.

“On the eve of Republic Day, Rashtrapati Ji gave a very inspiring address. She has correctly emphasised the uniqueness of our Constitution and appreciated the collective spirit that has taken our nation forward. Her address motivates every citizen to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening democracy, upholding constitutional ideals and building a Viksit Bharat,” the Prime Minister said.

President’s address to the nation

In her address to the nation on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, the President reflected on India’s constitutional journey since Independence and the enforcement of the Constitution on January 26, 1950, describing it as the foundational document of the largest republic in world history.

She said the constitutional ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity continue to define the Republic, and recalled the role of leaders such as Vallabhbhai Patel in strengthening national unity. She also referred to the ongoing commemorations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, calling the national song a source of enduring patriotism.

Highlighting National Voters’ Day, the President underlined the importance of informed and ethical participation in elections, noting that the increasing participation of women voters has added strength to India’s democracy. She also emphasised women-led development, citing progress in political representation, self-help groups, sports and entrepreneurship.

The address acknowledged the contributions of farmers, workers, scientists, teachers, healthcare professionals, sanitation workers, entrepreneurs, artists, armed forces and youth in nation-building, and paid tribute to overseas Indians for enhancing India’s global standing.

On governance and development, the President said India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite global uncertainties, driven by infrastructure creation, reforms such as GST, labour codes, and a focus on self-reliance. She highlighted inclusive welfare initiatives for the poor, tribal communities and farmers, and stressed that building a Viksit Bharat is a shared responsibility requiring active public participation.

The President also reiterated India’s commitment to environmental protection through the LiFE initiative, global peace, and the promotion of Indian knowledge systems and languages, noting that the Constitution is now available in all Eighth Schedule languages to deepen constitutional awareness.

Concluding her address, she called upon citizens to work together with the spirit of ‘Nation First’ to make the Republic stronger and more glorious.
