New Delhi, August 22: A massive digital campaign has erupted across social media against the government’s proposed blanket ban on online real money gaming, with #RegulateNotBan trending on X (formerly Twitter). The backlash follows the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 in both houses of the parliament earlier this week. The bill, spearheaded by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, proposes banning money-based online games while promoting e-sports and casual gaming formats. The bill now awaits the Presidential assent to become law.

The online trend is being amplified not only by gamers but also by entrepreneurs, professionals, and investors, who warn that the ban could stifle foreign direct investment (FDI), hurt innovation, and derail India’s digital economy growth story. Several leading online gaming companies have also submitted a petition to the government, urging it to replace prohibition with balanced regulation.

Supporters of the campaign argue that a regulatory framework with strict KYC norms, audited financial trails, and consumer protection safeguards would provide accountability without killing jobs or businesses. Critics say prohibition will only push the sector underground, making it harder to monitor and protect consumers.

On X, users voiced their concerns in sharp words:

  • “A ban ends careers overnight. Regulations strengthen careers for decades. Which future do we want? Balance ensures sustainability,” wrote one user.
  • “A ban is like shutting down the internet to stop cybercrime. Absurd. Regulation is the fix,” another user posted.
  • “A ban closes doors. Regulation opens opportunities with safety, fairness & accountability. Let’s choose progress, not prohibition,” said another.

Industry voices also chimed in. Digital policy commentator Aman Bandvi wrote: “Gaming bill chooses a blanket ban over smart regulation – a missed opportunity to build a framework. Strict KYC, audited money trails, and consumer safety. Bans push activity underground; regulation brings it to light.”

With over 500 million Indians engaged in online gaming, the outcome of this debate carries weight for one of the world’s largest digital user bases. The final decision now lies with the President, which is nothing but a procedural matter.

Citizens and industry leaders alike are urging the government to reconsider, warning that prohibition may choke innovation and jobs in a sunrise sector.
