KURNOOL: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commenced work on an 800 MW renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh with the groundbreaking ceremony held in Kurnool, marking one of the state’s largest integrated clean energy developments.
The project, being developed with an investment of ₹5,750 crore, comprises 400 MW of solar power at Pattikonda in Kurnool district and 400 MW of wind power at Kanekallu in Anantapur district. The wind component will be developed by Suzlon under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) arrangement, while TPREL will serve as the project developer.
The project has secured 800 MW Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity at the Anantapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL substations, enabling efficient evacuation of renewable energy through the national transmission network. It is being implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, which aims to accelerate renewable energy investments and sustainable industrial growth in the state.
The development will require about 3,462 acres of land, including nearly 2,700 acres for the solar installation and around 760 acres for wind infrastructure. Tata Power said the project is expected to generate approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases, while also providing annual lease rental income to landowners.
The project also includes a 200 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project for NTPC, supported by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a storage capacity of 25 MW/50 MWh. The remaining 200 MW solar capacity has been kept available for future allocation.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Andhra Pradesh Minister for IT, Electronics & Communications, Human Resource Development and RTG Nara Lokesh as the chief guest. Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Dr. Praveer Sinha, Industries and Commerce Minister TG Bharath, Pattikonda MLA KE Shyam Kumar, Rayadurg MLA Kalava Srinivasulu, and Kurnool District Collector Dr. A. Siri were among the dignitaries present.
Speaking at the event, Nara Lokesh said the project reflects growing investor confidence in Andhra Pradesh’s progressive policy framework and will contribute to the state’s long-term sustainable industrial growth while supporting India’s clean energy transition.
Dr. Praveer Sinha said the integrated 800 MW renewable energy project represents a significant step towards Tata Power’s clean energy mission by combining solar and wind generation to deliver reliable round-the-clock renewable power. He said the company remains committed to supporting India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030 and Tata Power’s own goal of becoming a 100 per cent clean energy company by 2045.
Suzlon Group Co-founder Girish Tanti said the project further strengthens the company’s long-standing partnership with Tata Power Renewables, taking their combined collaboration beyond the 1 GW milestone. He noted that Suzlon has been associated with Andhra Pradesh’s wind energy sector for over two decades and currently contributes nearly 1,600 MW of installed wind capacity across eight sites in the state.
