New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Phase I of the Noida International Airport at Jewar, a ₹11,200-crore project positioned as a major boost to Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure and India’s aviation capacity, even as he addressed growing public anxiety over global disruptions triggered by the West Asia conflict.

Calling the airport a milestone in the “Viksit UP, Viksit Bharat” vision, Modi said the project would transform connectivity and economic prospects across western Uttar Pradesh, benefiting regions such as Agra, Mathura, Meerut, Aligarh, and Ghaziabad. He described airports as “engines of progress” that create opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, and youth.

Amid intensifying rumours across parts of the country about a possible lockdown due to the ongoing war in West Asia, the Prime Minister sought to reassure citizens, stating that the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the burden of global disruptions does not fall on ordinary families and farmers.

Referring to the wider geopolitical situation, Modi noted that the conflict has already disrupted supplies of essential commodities such as fuel, fertilisers, and food in several countries. He emphasised that India, which imports significant quantities of crude oil and gas from the region, is closely monitoring the situation and acting proactively to maintain stability.

The Prime Minister highlighted that despite global uncertainties, India continues to push ahead with large-scale infrastructure development. He pointed out that in recent weeks alone, the region has seen multiple major projects, including a semiconductor facility in Noida, expansion of the Meerut Metro, and the rollout of the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat rail corridor.

Positioning Noida as an emerging logistics and industrial hub, Modi said the airport, along with dedicated freight corridors converging at Dadri, would enable seamless multi-modal connectivity, allowing goods produced in the region to reach global markets efficiently.

He also underscored the role of ethanol blending in reducing India’s dependence on crude oil imports, noting that increased production has saved substantial foreign exchange and supported farmers, particularly in the sugarcane sector.

Highlighting broader aviation growth, the Prime Minister said India now has more than 160 airports, with connectivity expanding beyond major cities to smaller towns under the UDAN scheme. He added that the government has approved nearly ₹29,000 crore to develop 100 new airports and 200 helipads in the coming years.

The Prime Minister also announced efforts to strengthen the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) ecosystem, including a new facility at Jewar, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign services and creating employment opportunities.

Calling for unity and calm amid global uncertainty, Modi urged citizens to avoid panic and misinformation, stressing that coordinated efforts by governments and public cooperation would be key to navigating the current situation.

He concluded by expressing confidence that India will continue to advance its development agenda while effectively managing the challenges arising from global geopolitical tensions.
