₹716 Crore Dehradun Bypass Project Hits 44% Completion; Set to Ease City Congestion by 2027
Designed as a fully access-controlled highway, it will serve as an alternate south-western route, diverting non-destined traffic away from the city core.
The bypass will connect Jhajhra to the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor near Asharori Check Post, linking the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of NH-7.

New Delhi: National Highways Authority of India is fast-tracking construction of a 12-km greenfield four-lane access-controlled bypass in Dehradun, aimed at reducing urban congestion and strengthening regional connectivity.
Ministry of Road Transport & Highways in a statement said on Thursday, the ₹716 crore project has achieved around 44% physical progress and is targeted for completion by April 2027.
The bypass will connect Jhajhra to the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor near Asharori Check Post, linking the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of NH-7. Designed as a fully access-controlled highway, it will serve as an alternate south-western route, diverting non-destined traffic away from the city core.
The project is expected to significantly ease congestion in Dehradun while improving connectivity to key industrial and regional hubs including Selaqui, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur, and Paonta Sahib, as well as northern states such as Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
With a design speed of 100 kmph—reduced to 80 kmph in forest stretches—the project integrates environmental safeguards. The right of way has been optimised to 30 metres, compared to the conventional 60 metres, to minimise forest impact.
Wildlife protection measures form a key component of the project. These include a 350-metre vehicular overpass, a cattle overpass, seven minor bridges, 21 box culverts, and dedicated pipe culverts for smaller fauna. Continuous fencing and wildlife signage are also being installed to reduce human-animal conflict.
The bypass is also expected to enhance access to major tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, supporting tourism growth in the region.
Once completed, the project will divert heavy and transit traffic away from Dehradun city, improving urban mobility and overall quality of life.
