Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Takes Charge as 27th Chief of the Naval Staff
Veteran naval officer succeeds Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi after nearly four decades of distinguished service
Admiral Krishna Swaminathan assumes charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy in New Delhi on Sunday. He succeeds Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retired after more than four decades of distinguished service.

New Delhi: Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Sunday assumed charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of the Indian Navy, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retired after more than 41 years of distinguished service.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Admiral Swaminathan is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare and brings nearly four decades of operational, command and strategic experience to the country’s top naval appointment.
During his illustrious naval career, he has commanded several frontline warships, including guided missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, guided missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
As a Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command in Kochi, before taking over as Flag Officer Sea Training. He later commanded the Western Fleet, widely regarded as the Indian Navy’s principal combat force, and subsequently served as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.
Following his promotion to Vice Admiral, he held several key appointments, including Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command; Controller Personnel Services; Chief of Personnel; and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters. Before assuming charge as Navy Chief, he served as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
An accomplished scholar and military strategist, Admiral Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla; Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom; College of Naval Warfare, Karanja; and the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a Master of Science in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King’s College London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies from Mumbai University, and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.
Admiral Swaminathan has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation.
