New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with chief executives and experts working in the artificial intelligence sector, underscoring the need to build a transparent, impartial, secure, and ethically governed AI ecosystem aligned with India’s national priorities.

The interaction was held at Lok Kalyan Marg and was aligned with preparations for the upcoming IndiaAI Impact Summit scheduled in February. The discussion focused on fostering strategic collaborations, accelerating innovation, and advancing India’s goal of self-reliance in artificial intelligence.

During the interaction, industry leaders expressed strong support for the objective of making India self-sufficient in AI technologies. They acknowledged the government’s sustained policy push and investments aimed at positioning India as a global leader in AI development and deployment.

Indigenous technology and global impact

Modi emphasised the need to embrace emerging technologies across sectors and urged wider adoption of indigenous technology in critical areas of the economy. Drawing a parallel with the success of the Unified Payments Interface, he said India has already demonstrated its technological capabilities at scale and can replicate similar success in the AI domain.

He said India’s unique combination of scale, diversity, and democratic values has strengthened global trust in its digital infrastructure. In line with the vision of “AI for All,” the prime minister stressed that Indian technology should not only create domestic impact but also inspire confidence globally.

Ethics, transparency, and data security

Highlighting governance concerns, Modi said there should be no compromise on the ethical use of artificial intelligence. He stressed the importance of data security, transparency, and impartiality, noting that India’s AI ecosystem must reflect the country’s societal values and democratic ethos.

He also called for focused efforts on AI skilling and talent development to ensure that technological advancement translates into inclusive growth and employment generation.

Industry and academic participation

The high-level roundtable was attended by CEOs from leading technology and infrastructure companies, including Wipro, TCS, HCL Tech, Zoho Corporation, LTI Mindtree, Jio Platforms, AdaniConnex, Nxtra Data, and Netweb Technologies.

Experts from IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, and IIT Bombay also participated.

Union minister for electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and minister of state Jitin Prasada were present at the interaction.

The prime minister urged industry leaders and experts to leverage the forthcoming IndiaAI Impact Summit to explore new partnerships, accelerate innovation, and position India as a preferred global destination for responsible and inclusive AI development.
