New Delhi, August 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, announced the launch of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, a futuristic security initiative aimed at providing comprehensive protection to all strategic and civilian installations across the country by 2035.

Referring to the evolving nature of warfare, including missile and drone attacks, the Prime Minister said India has demonstrated resilience and technological prowess in neutralising enemy offensives, notably during Operation Sindoor. “Whatever technology comes to attack us, our technology should prove to be better than that,” he said, underscoring the importance of continuous upgradation of defence capabilities.

Drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra in the Mahabharata, Modi said the mission would not only neutralize enemy attacks but also deliver powerful counter-offensives.

Key elements of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission include:

  • Indigenous R&D and manufacturing: All research, development, and production to be undertaken within India, leveraging the talent of Indian youth.
  • Future-ready warfare strategies: A system to anticipate emerging warfare trends and design proactive strategies, described by the Prime Minister as the “Plus One” approach.
  • Precision action systems: Development of advanced, targeted weaponry capable of precise strikes, ensuring both defensive and offensive superiority.

The Prime Minister stressed that the initiative is not only about military strength but also about safeguarding critical civilian infrastructure — including hospitals, railways, and places of worship — with an expanding “national security shield.”

Calling for the blessings and support of citizens, Modi said, “No matter how much prosperity there is, if there is indifference towards security, then even prosperity is of no use. The importance of security is very great.”

The Sudarshan Chakra Mission is positioned as a cornerstone of India’s defence strategy over the next decade, aligning with the government’s broader push for Atmanirbhar Bharat in security and technology.
