New Delhi: India on Thursday strongly criticised remarks linked to a social media post referring to Indians, calling them “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” while asserting that such comments do not reflect the reality of bilateral ties.

Responding to media queries, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said the government had taken note of both the original comments and a subsequent clarification issued by the US Embassy.

“We have seen the comments, as also the subsequent statement issued by the US Embassy in response. The remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste. They certainly do not reflect the reality of the India–US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests,” he said.

Background: Social media controversy and diplomatic response

The remarks came in the backdrop of a controversy triggered by a social media post amplified in the United States that referred to India and Indians in derogatory terms. The episode drew sharp reactions in India, with the government formally conveying its disapproval.

Following the backlash, the US Embassy issued a statement seeking to contextualise the remarks and highlighted that India is viewed as a “great country” with strong leadership, in what was widely seen as an attempt at damage control.

Reports indicate that the controversy originated from comments linked to US political discourse and immigration-related narratives, which were subsequently amplified online, triggering diplomatic sensitivity.

India–US ties: Strategic depth beyond episodic tensions

Despite periodic frictions, India–US relations have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership spanning defence, trade, technology and people-to-people ties.

The relationship is anchored in shared democratic values, growing economic interdependence, and expanding cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism, critical technologies and Indo-Pacific security.

Public perception between the two countries has also remained largely positive, with consistent goodwill and deep cultural linkages reinforced through diaspora engagement and educational exchanges.

At the same time, occasional diplomatic tensions—ranging from trade disputes to isolated incidents—have surfaced in the past, but have typically been managed without derailing the broader trajectory of cooperation.

Diplomatic signalling: Firm tone, calibrated response

The government’s response reflects a calibrated diplomatic approach—firmly rejecting inappropriate remarks while avoiding escalation.

By underscoring the long-standing foundations of the bilateral relationship, New Delhi signalled that isolated comments or social media controversies do not define the overall partnership.

The episode also highlights the growing role of social media in shaping diplomatic narratives, where remarks made in domestic political contexts can quickly acquire international implications.

The bigger picture

The current response underscores India’s emphasis on dignity in international discourse, even as it continues to prioritise strategic engagement with key global partners.

As both countries navigate evolving geopolitical realities, the India–US partnership is expected to remain resilient—driven more by converging interests than by episodic controversies.
