New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body that will serve as the central institutional mechanism for AI governance policy development and coordination in India.

The move operationalises key institutional recommendations outlined in India’s AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey, both of which called for a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to managing the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.

The AIGEG is designed to align the actions of ministries, departments, regulators and advisory bodies under a coherent national strategy. It will also address the economic and labour implications of AI deployment, ensuring that technological advancement remains aligned with social stability and workforce realities.

The body will be chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information & Broadcasting, with MoS Jitin Prasada serving as Vice Chairperson.

Its membership includes senior representatives from across government, spanning policy, science and technology, security and economic domains, reflecting the cross-sectoral nature of AI governance.

Positioned as the apex inter-ministerial body within India’s AI governance framework, AIGEG will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC). The committee will provide advisory inputs on global developments, emerging technologies, regulatory approaches and evolving risks in the AI ecosystem.

The formation of AIGEG marks a significant step towards institutionalising AI governance in India, with a focus on responsible innovation, policy coherence and long-term economic resilience.
