New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday expanded its administrative infrastructure with the inauguration of a new office at the Talkatora Annexe Building in the national capital, a move aimed at addressing growing space requirements and supporting the Commission’s expanding institutional responsibilities.

The new facility was inaugurated by UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar in the presence of Members of the Commission. The additional office space is expected to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen the Commission’s ability to manage its increasing workload.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kumar noted that UPSC has been facing office space constraints for some time, even as its responsibilities have expanded significantly over the years.

“In view of the Commission’s expanding responsibilities, including the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and other institutional initiatives, it has been decided to shift certain offices to the Talkatora Annexe Building on an interim basis until permanent facilities are developed at Dholpur House,” he said.

The Chairman emphasized that UPSC continues to play a critical role in strengthening India’s governance framework through a transparent, fair and merit-based recruitment system. He expressed confidence that the additional infrastructure would improve coordination among various divisions and help the Commission discharge its constitutional responsibilities more effectively.

The expansion comes at a time when UPSC’s role continues to evolve beyond conducting examinations and recruitment processes, with the Commission taking on new institutional initiatives and capacity-building functions.

According to officials, the new office marks an important step in augmenting UPSC’s institutional capacity and ensuring that it remains equipped to meet emerging administrative and operational requirements.

A Legacy Institution

The Union Public Service Commission traces its origins to the recommendations of the Lee Commission, which led to the establishment of the Public Service Commission in 1926. Following the adoption of the Constitution of India, it was reconstituted as the UPSC and entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring merit-based recruitment to the country’s civil services and other public services.

The Commission’s headquarters, Dholpur House, has a rich history of its own. Built in 1920 as the capital residence of Maharaj-Rana Udai Bhan Singh of the erstwhile Dholpur State, the building was designated as the headquarters of UPSC in 1952. Since then, it has served as the nerve centre of India’s premier constitutional recruitment agency, overseeing examinations and recruitment for the civil services and numerous other government positions.

Officials said the new office at Talkatora Annexe will function as an interim arrangement while plans for permanent expansion at Dholpur House are developed, ensuring that the Commission continues to deliver recruitment and examination-related services with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
