Victoria (Seychelles): Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ Presidential Distinction, the highest environmental honour instituted by the Republic of Seychelles, in recognition of his global leadership in promoting sustainable development, ocean conservation and climate action.

The honour was presented by President Dr Patrick Herminie during a special ceremony in Seychelles. According to the Government of India, this is the first time the prestigious Presidential Distinction has been awarded.

Recognition for Blue Economy Leadership

The Government of Seychelles said the honour recognises Prime Minister Modi’s sustained efforts in advancing the interests of developing countries and his longstanding commitment to promoting the Blue Economy, climate resilience, sustainable management of ocean resources and the developmental priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The award also acknowledges India’s leadership in global environmental initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign and the International Big Cat Alliance.

Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to all nations committed to protecting the environment and combating climate change.

He said the recognition, coming as India and Seychelles celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, would further strengthen the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries.

Strengthening India-Seychelles Partnership

Officials said the honour reflects Seychelles’ appreciation of India’s growing role as a trusted development partner across the Indian Ocean Region.

Over the years, India has expanded cooperation with Seychelles in maritime security, capacity building, infrastructure development, disaster resilience, renewable energy and sustainable development.

The latest recognition also highlights the increasing importance of the Blue Economy as a key pillar of India’s engagement with island nations and coastal economies.

Global Recognition for Sustainability

The ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ distinction adds to a series of international honours conferred on Prime Minister Modi for his contributions to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

These include the Champions of the Earth Award by the United Nations, the Agricola Medal awarded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Seoul Peace Prize, recognising initiatives that combine economic development with environmental sustainability.

The latest honour further reinforces India’s growing international profile in advancing climate action, renewable energy, ocean governance and sustainable development as part of its broader global engagement.
