New Delhi, August 7: In a move aimed at transforming digital service delivery and boosting governance efficiency, the government has conceptualized DIGIPIN—a location-precision system designed to assign geotagged addresses to every place across India. The initiative, which is now open source, is expected to greatly improve location accuracy and support seamless integration across public platforms and services.

Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, stated that the detailed technical documentation and source code of DIGIPIN have been shared with all relevant ministries and state governments. This is to enable its smooth integration into existing workflows, services, schemes, and citizen-facing applications.

DIGIPIN aims to make every location digitally addressable, a critical step toward improving planning, logistics, and service delivery—especially in remote and rural areas where traditional address systems are often inadequate.

Key Benefits of DIGIPIN

  • Enhanced Location Accuracy: Enables precise identification of physical locations, minimizing delivery errors and improving public service reach.
  • Governance Efficiency: Assists government agencies in delivering welfare schemes, utilities, and emergency services with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Transparency: Allows public visibility of exact locations of government assets and offices, promoting openness and trust.
  • Jurisdiction Mapping: Helps determine the correct administrative jurisdiction associated with a location, simplifying coordination among departments.
  • Improved Grievance Redressal: Strengthens service accountability by linking complaints and requests to verified geotagged addresses.

The rollout of DIGIPIN underscores India’s continued push for technology-enabled governance and citizen-centric public services, with an emphasis on digital inclusion and rural empowerment. By making the platform open-source, the government is also encouraging innovation and collaboration with developers and solution providers across sectors.
