New Delhi, December 21: The Fact Check Unit (FCU) of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has urged citizens to actively report suspected fake news and misinformation related to the Government of India through its dedicated WhatsApp hotline and digital platforms.
The PIB Fact Check Unit, set up in November 2019 under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, was established to counter the spread of fake news and misleading information concerning government policies, decisions and initiatives.
Members of the public can submit fact-check requests or report suspicious content circulating online via the WhatsApp hotline at +91 87997 11259, through email at factcheck@pib.gov.in, or by visiting the official website factcheck.pib.gov.in.
According to the government, the Fact Check Unit undertakes verification through both suo motu action and complaints received from citizens. The unit first assesses whether the information falls within its mandate and then verifies the authenticity of the content using authorised sources. Once verified, the PIB FCU disseminates accurate information using Information, Education and Communication (IEC) strategies, creating content tailored for social media platforms to maximise public awareness.
The fact-checked and verified information is regularly published on the official social media handles of PIB Fact Check to ensure that authentic and timely information reaches the public.
The PIB Fact Check Unit plays a crucial role in monitoring online content related to the Government of India. During Operation Sindoor, the unit was actively involved in countering misinformation and hostile narratives by promptly debunking false claims and issuing verified information, thereby helping prevent the spread of misleading and anti-India content.
