Muscat, December 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Thursday conferred with the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening India–Oman relations and his leadership in advancing the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The award was presented by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik during the Prime Minister’s official visit to Oman, which coincides with the completion of 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman, lending special significance to the occasion.

Accepting the honour, Modi dedicated it to the enduring friendship between the two nations and described it as a tribute to the warmth and affection shared between the people of India and Oman. He said the recognition reflects the deep cultural, economic and people-to-people ties that have evolved over centuries.

Instituted in 1970 by Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Order of Oman is bestowed upon select global leaders in recognition of their distinguished service to public life and for making significant contributions to bilateral relations with the Sultanate.

India and Oman share a long-standing relationship rooted in maritime trade, cultural exchanges and economic cooperation. The conferment of the honour underscores the growing depth of the strategic partnership, which spans trade, energy, investment, defence cooperation and diaspora engagement.
