NEW DELHI: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, has showcased commercial electric cooking technologies as part of efforts to accelerate India’s transition from LPG to electricity in commercial and institutional kitchens.

The “Commercial Induction Cooking Showcase & Chef Challenge”, organised in New Delhi under the theme “Accelerating India’s Electric Cooking Ambition: From Technology Demonstration to Real-World Adoption”, brought together policymakers, public sector enterprises, manufacturers, technology providers, chefs, hoteliers and commercial kitchen operators.

Power Ministry Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, the chief guest, inaugurated an exhibition featuring commercial electric cooking appliances and technologies from seven manufacturers.

Energy security driving electric cooking

Addressing the gathering, Agarwal said energy security was a key driver behind India’s shift towards electric cooking. He pointed to the impact of global conflicts and rising LPG prices and said e-cooking could become both a strategic and operational choice.

He highlighted initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as providing a strong foundation for expanding electric cooking, particularly in the residential sector.

However, he noted that wider adoption faced behavioural and infrastructure-related challenges, including concerns among chefs and consumers about cooking outcomes and gaps in local distribution capacity. He identified greater awareness as an important lever for driving demand.

BEE plans commercial cooking vendor directory

BEE Director General Krushna Chandra Panigrahy said electric cooking combines energy efficiency, energy security, convenience and sustainability.

BEE has invited manufacturers, distributors, system integrators and solution providers to register for the Go Electric Commercial Electric Cooking Vendor Directory. The public platform is intended to help hotels, restaurants, canteens, hospitals and other institutions identify credible commercial electric cooking providers.

BEE is also working with the Bureau of Indian Standards to develop a Standards & Labeling framework for commercial induction hobs.

Panigrahy said the objective was to move beyond individual technology demonstrations towards a mature commercial e-cooking ecosystem in which users have confidence in the technology and manufacturers understand market requirements.

Chefs demonstrate induction cooking

The event also featured a Commercial Induction Chef Challenge, in which three chefs prepared dishes using induction cooktops. Participants were able to observe the technology’s cooking performance, heat control, ease of use and cooking time.

BEE said it would continue working with the Ministry of Power, CLASP, manufacturers, industry associations, public sector enterprises and commercial kitchen operators to promote energy-efficient electric cooking.

The initiative is aimed at moving India’s commercial kitchens from technology demonstration towards wider real-world adoption as part of the government’s vision of a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
