NEW DELHI: The Government of India has identified 1,244 unique products across 773 districts under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, aimed at promoting region-specific products, strengthening local entrepreneurship and expanding domestic and global market access.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is implementing the initiative, with State and Union Territory governments responsible for selecting products that best represent their districts.

To enhance the visibility and market reach of ODOP products, the government has facilitated participation in domestic and international exhibitions, organised capacity-building programmes and conducted onboarding drives for sellers on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) through the dedicated ODOP Bazaar.

The government is also supporting PM Ekta Malls (Unity Malls) under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment. States and eligible Union Territories can receive interest-free loans of up to ₹200 crore for establishing these malls to promote the sale of ODOP, Geographical Indication (GI) and local handicraft products.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is promoting food-based ODOP products through the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme. The scheme offers a 35 per cent credit-linked capital subsidy of up to ₹10 lakh for eligible projects, along with support for self-help groups, entrepreneurship training, common infrastructure, branding, packaging, quality certification and food safety compliance.

The government clarified that there is no district-wise financial allocation under the ODOP programme. Instead, States and Union Territories are encouraged to leverage multiple Central and State government schemes related to MSMEs, agriculture, food processing, exports, handicrafts, handlooms and skill development to support product development and market expansion.

To strengthen exports, the government has aligned ODOP with the Districts as Export Hubs initiative. Export-potential products and services have been identified in 734 districts, while State Export Promotion Committees and District Export Promotion Committees have been established across all 36 States and Union Territories. So far, 249 District Export Action Plans have been adopted to improve value chains and export readiness.

Market access has also been expanded through a dedicated ODOP storefront on the Government e-Marketplace, where more than 500 product categories covering over 1,300 products are available for procurement. In addition, more than ten States have launched dedicated e-commerce platforms to promote and sell ODOP products.

The government said ODOP products are being showcased globally through Indian Missions abroad, which have established ODOP Walls to display products from different districts. Promotional activities include exhibitions, buyer-seller meets and participation in international trade fairs. Three international retail stores—two in Singapore and one in Kuwait—currently sell ODOP products, while selected items have also been presented as official gifts during bilateral and multilateral engagements.

According to the government, the initiative has helped improve market access, encourage entrepreneurship and generate employment. However, it noted that exports specifically attributable to the ODOP initiative are not maintained as a separate category at the national level.
