New Delhi: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has secured a ₹2,977 crore contract from NMDC Limited to develop a state-of-the-art iron ore handling and blending facility at Visakhapatnam, marking a significant expansion of the company’s footprint in industrial and mining infrastructure.
The project, awarded through a Letter of Award issued by NMDC, involves the development of a modern Buffer Stockpiles and Blending Yard facility designed to strengthen iron ore logistics, improve quality management and support NMDC’s growing production and evacuation requirements.
10 Million Tonne Annual Capacity
The proposed facility will feature an integrated iron ore handling system comprising buffer stockpiles, blending yards, civil infrastructure, material handling systems and railway connectivity. The project is designed to handle 10 million tonnes per annum (10 MTPA) of iron ore.
The blending facility will enable NMDC to achieve specific ore grades required by domestic and international customers, ensuring compliance with quality specifications while enhancing operational efficiency.
Spread across approximately 472 hectares, the project is scheduled for completion within 42 months. RVNL will execute the assignment on an end-to-end basis, covering engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning activities.
Supporting India’s Mining and Steel Ambitions
Industry experts view the project as an important addition to India’s mining logistics ecosystem, particularly as the country seeks to expand steel production and improve supply-chain efficiency.
The modern logistics hub is expected to create an integrated ecosystem for storage, blending and transportation of iron ore, helping NMDC support its capacity expansion plans while enhancing India’s ability to serve both domestic and export markets.
The project aligns with the country’s broader industrial growth strategy, which places increasing emphasis on efficient resource movement, advanced logistics infrastructure and value-added mineral processing.
RVNL’s Growing Diversification Strategy
Originally established to accelerate railway infrastructure development, RVNL has steadily transformed itself into a diversified infrastructure company with capabilities spanning railways, metros, highways, ports, telecom, solar energy and building infrastructure.
Over the years, the company has executed several complex projects, including the New Pamban Bridge, the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Link and metro rail projects across multiple cities. It is also involved in the manufacturing of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets.
The NMDC assignment further strengthens RVNL’s entry into advanced material handling systems and large-scale industrial infrastructure projects, expanding its role beyond conventional transport infrastructure.
Technology-Driven Infrastructure
According to RVNL, the project will leverage modern technologies, innovative construction methodologies and global best practices to create a world-class iron ore logistics facility. The company believes the project will set new benchmarks in quality, efficiency and sustainability while supporting India’s vision of becoming a developed economy.
The development also reflects growing confidence among public sector enterprises in RVNL’s project execution capabilities and its ability to deliver technologically complex infrastructure projects on a large scale.
A Two-Decade Infrastructure Legacy
Established in 2003, RVNL has completed more than 157 infrastructure projects covering over 17,000 kilometres of railway network and has consistently earned top ratings from the Department of Public Enterprises for fourteen consecutive years.
With projects spanning transportation, urban mobility, energy and industrial infrastructure, the company continues to evolve from its original rail-focused mandate toward a broader “All Infra” strategy aimed at supporting India’s infrastructure and industrial development agenda.
