Tokyo, August 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba on Friday attended the India-Japan Economic Forum, jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Keidanren (Japan Business Federation). The event saw participation from leading industry figures, including CEOs of the India-Japan Business Leaders’ Forum.
In his address, Modi hailed the success of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, noting robust cooperation in investment, manufacturing, and technology. He invited Japanese companies to expand their presence in India, stressing that political stability, policy predictability, and ongoing reforms were making India an attractive investment destination. He also cited India’s recent credit rating upgrade as proof of rising investor confidence.
The Prime Minister outlined five key areas for deeper collaboration: advanced manufacturing (batteries, robotics, semiconductors, shipbuilding, nuclear energy), technology and innovation (AI, quantum, space, biotech), green energy transition, next-generation infrastructure (high-speed rail, logistics, mobility), and skill development with people-to-people ties. “India contributes nearly 18% to global growth and is on track to becoming the world’s third-largest economy in a few years,” he said.
Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized synergies between Indian talent and Japanese technology in building resilient supply chains. He listed three priorities for future cooperation: strengthening people-to-people partnerships, fusing technology with markets for green initiatives, and advancing collaboration in critical and emerging sectors such as semiconductors.
The forum also featured the presentation of the 12th India-Japan Business Leaders’ Forum report to the two leaders. JETRO Chairman and CEO Norihiko Ishiguro highlighted new B2B MoUs signed between Indian and Japanese companies in sectors including steel, AI, space, clean energy, education, and skills.
