NHAI, ICICI Bank Ink Pact to Launch India’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling in Gujarat; Here’s How it Works

With advanced RFID readers and ANPR cameras enabling barrier-free tolling, the system is expected to improve revenue collection, reduce delays, and significantly enhance user convenience.
New Delhi, August 30: In a landmark move towards barrier-free highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank to roll out the country’s first comprehensive Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Choryasi Fee Plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat. The pact, signed through Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), will make Choryasi India’s first barrier-free toll plaza.
An agreement was also finalized to implement MLFF at Gharaunda Fee Plaza on NH-44 in Haryana. NHAI plans to expand the system to about 25 plazas nationwide this financial year.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said the initiative marks “a significant milestone in the modernization of tolling in India,” adding that MLFF will create a more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly highway ecosystem while paving the way for nationwide adoption.
How MLFF Benefits Highway Users
- Fully electronic system: No physical toll booths, ensuring uninterrupted vehicle movement.
- Automatic toll collection: Payments processed seamlessly using FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
- No congestion: Vehicles need not stop, eliminating long queues at plazas.
- Reduced carbon emissions: Less idling and fuel consumption contribute to environmental sustainability.
- Travel time measurement: Data generated through MLFF helps track journey times and improve traffic management.
- Smoother experience: A faster, smarter, and more efficient highway network for commuters and logistics operators alike.
