Hyderabad, December 20: Mohammed Lateef Khan, founder and chairman of MS Education Academy, on Saturday said efforts would be strengthened to increase the participation of students from Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).
He was addressing a felicitation ceremony organised by the MANUU Alumni Association, where he was honoured by vice-chancellor Ainul Hasan following his receipt of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Award from the government of Telangana for contributions to education and social service.
Speaking as chief guest, Khan linked his personal journey in education to the ideals of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first education minister and a strong proponent of inclusive and culturally rooted learning. He said his engagement with education has been shaped not merely by institutions but by Azad’s philosophy of knowledge, culture and social responsibility.
Recalling his early education, Khan said he studied at Maulana Azad Memorial High School, the same campus where MS Education Academy began its journey through evening classes. He emphasised the importance of language and identity, noting that Urdu represents cultural continuity and intellectual heritage. He said MS institutions have made Urdu a compulsory subject to ensure students remain connected to their roots.
Highlighting MANUU’s academic strengths, Khan said the university offers quality higher education, modern infrastructure and affordable fee structures in a culturally supportive environment, making it especially relevant for Urdu-knowing students. However, he expressed concern over the relatively low enrolment of students from Hyderabad despite the university being located in the city.
Welcoming a suggestion by alumni association president Aijaz Ali Qureshi, Khan supported the idea of organising campus visits for school students to familiarise them with MANUU’s academic offerings and facilities. He said MS Education Academy would facilitate structured campus visits for its students.
Earlier, vice-chancellor Ainul Hasan said low local enrolment from Telangana was largely due to lack of awareness and misconceptions about MANUU’s academic scope. He noted that outreach initiatives, including campus visits, student engagement programmes, scholarships and hostel facilities, have begun to yield positive results.
Khan also welcomed the proposal for a special quota for local students from Hyderabad and Telangana, reaffirming MS Education Academy’s commitment to guiding eligible students towards MANUU through its educational network.
The programme began with a welcome address by Aijaz Ali Qureshi. The proceedings were conducted by Mohammed Mustafa Sarvari, associate professor. Alumni members shared personal reflections, describing their education at MANUU as instrumental in shaping their professional journeys. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Najmul Hasan, coordinator, alumni affairs.
