Cabinet Approves ₹1507 Crore Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan
The project, to be executed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will cater to the city’s growing stature as both the industrial capital of Rajasthan and the country’s leading educational coaching hub.
New Delhi, August 20: The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the development of a Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan, at an estimated cost of ₹1,507 crore.
The project, to be executed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will cater to the city’s growing stature as both the industrial capital of Rajasthan and the country’s leading educational coaching hub.
The Government of Rajasthan has transferred 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for the project, which will be designed to handle A-321 type aircraft. Key features include a 20,000 sqm terminal building with the capacity to manage 1,000 peak-hour passengers and 2 million passengers annually, a 3,200-metre runway, an apron with seven parking bays, two link taxiways, an ATC-cum-technical block, fire station, car park, and allied facilities.
The existing Kota Airport, with its shorter 1,220-metre runway and modest 400 sqm terminal, can only accommodate smaller Code ‘B’ aircraft like the DO-228 and handle 50 passengers at peak hours. Due to space constraints and urbanization around the site, it cannot be expanded for commercial operations, prompting the need for a new Greenfield facility.
Officials said the new airport would boost regional connectivity, ease passenger traffic growth, and strengthen Kota’s role as an educational and industrial hub, while also opening up opportunities for trade, tourism and investment in Rajasthan.
