New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has covered more than 1.03 lakh schools across the country under its special drive for Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) in Aadhaar, benefiting around 1.2 crore schoolchildren so far.

The mission-mode exercise, launched in September 2025, aims to facilitate biometric updates for children aged 7–15 years directly within school campuses. The drive gained momentum following technological integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), enabling real-time visibility of students’ MBU status.

The integration with UDISE+, managed by the union Department of School Education & Literacy, allowed authorities to identify children due for biometric updates and organise targeted camps within schools.

UIDAI regional and state offices have been coordinating with state education departments, union territories, district administrations, schools and ecosystem partners to implement the initiative efficiently.

Currently, over 4,000 biometric machines are deployed nationwide for the exercise, with plans underway to augment capacity to accelerate coverage.

Updating children’s biometrics in Aadhaar ensures smoother authentication for availing government scheme benefits, scholarships and for registration in competitive examinations such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and Common University Entrance Test (CUET), wherever applicable.

The six-month mission drive is currently underway. UIDAI has made the Mandatory Biometric Update for children in the 7–15 age group free of cost for one year beginning October 1, 2025.

Apart from school camps, children can complete their MBU at Aadhaar enrolment centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras across the country.
