₹1,067 crore elevated corridor to add three stations; completion targeted in four years

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the extension of the north-south corridor of Gujarat Metro from GIFT City to Shahpur, adding 3.33 km of elevated track with three new stations.

The project, to be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRC), is estimated to cost ₹1,067.35 crore and is scheduled for completion in approximately four years.

The extension is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with ridership expected to rise to about 58,059 passengers by 2041.

The new stretch is aimed at strengthening connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, which houses major multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial centres. The corridor is expected to ease daily commuting for business, employment and education purposes, while improving overall network integration and passenger convenience.

The project is also expected to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. Post-construction, approximately 250 personnel will be employed for operations and maintenance. Authorities said the project will also create indirect employment through associated activities.

GMRC is a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the government of Gujarat.
