Medical device parks in 3 states, 18 skill projects approved; 750 high-tech professionals to be trained

New Delhi: India’s push for self-reliance in the medical technology sector has gathered pace, with 38 high-end medical devices now being manufactured domestically under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Promoting Domestic Manufacturing of Medical Devices, the Union government said on Friday.

The initiative aims to attract large investments, expand domestic manufacturing capacity, and incentivise local production of advanced medical technologies that were previously import-dependent.

Under the scheme for promotion of medical device parks, dedicated parks are being set up in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. These parks are designed to create a competitive ecosystem with plug-and-play infrastructure, subsidised land, and concessions such as stamp duty exemptions.

The shared facilities model significantly reduces upfront capital expenditure for manufacturers by providing access to advanced infrastructure including 3D design and printing, electronic assembly, moulding, sterilisation, biocompatibility testing, toxicology, electromagnetic interference testing, component testing, and gamma radiation facilities. This reduces per-unit manufacturing costs and shortens product development timelines.

In parallel, the capacity building and skill development sub-scheme under the strengthening of medical device industry programme is in the implementation phase. The programme focuses on creating specialised high-tech manpower through postgraduate, PG diploma and skilling courses aligned with industry requirements.

So far, 18 projects covering more than 12 premier institutions – including IITs, NITs, NIPERs and NIMHANS – have been approved. These initiatives are expected to create around 750 high-tech professionals over the next three years.

The Promotion of Research in Pharma-MedTech (PRIP) scheme has also been launched to provide financial assistance for research and development projects in industry, MSMEs and startups, particularly in priority areas including novel medical devices.

A Centre of Excellence for medical devices has been established at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad, to strengthen research infrastructure and industry-academia linkages. The NIPER Council has also set up an Academia-Industry Coordination Committee to promote strategic collaboration between NIPERs and the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries.
