India Marks Record-Breaking Year in Clean Energy in 2025: Pralhad Joshi
DELHI: India recorded its highest-ever annual growth in clean energy in 2025, with non-fossil fuel installed capacity rising 22.6% to 266.78 GW, driven by the addition of 49.12 GW during the year, Union minister Pralhad Joshi said.
Solar power emerged as the primary growth engine, with installed capacity jumping 38.8% from 97.86 GW in 2024 to 135.81 GW in 2025. Wind energy capacity also expanded steadily, rising 13.2% to 54.51 GW from 48.16 GW a year earlier. Together, solar and wind continued to anchor India’s renewable energy expansion.
Other clean energy segments contributed to diversification. Bioenergy capacity reached 11.61 GW, including 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy off-grid projects, highlighting progress in clean fuel generation and waste management. Small hydro capacity increased to 5.16 GW, supporting decentralised renewable development, while large hydro stood at 50.91 GW, including 7,175.6 MW of pumped storage capacity to strengthen grid stability.
Joshi said the record growth reflected decisive policy direction, long-term vision and sustained implementation, adding that the progress strengthens India’s energy security, climate commitments and transition towards a self-reliant green economy. He said the country is moving steadily towards the national target of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
The minister said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will continue working with states and stakeholders to accelerate renewable energy deployment across the country.
