DoT organises webinar on standardisation processes for startups and TTDF beneficiaries
The webinar was hosted by Telecom Centres of Excellence India (TCoE India) on behalf of DoT, in collaboration with the Telecommunications Standards Development Society India (TSDSI) and the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC).
New Delhi, January 8: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the ministry of communications, organised a webinar on “Standardization Processes” on Tuesday to enhance awareness among startups, beneficiaries of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), academia and industry stakeholders about national and international telecom standardisation frameworks and participation mechanisms.
The webinar was hosted by Telecom Centres of Excellence India (TCoE India) on behalf of DoT, in collaboration with the Telecommunications Standards Development Society India (TSDSI) and the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC). More than 150 participants, including startups, TTDF beneficiaries, academic institutions and industry stakeholders, attended the session.
The webinar opened with an inaugural session addressed by Ashok Kumar, DDG (standards, research and innovation), DoT; Rajesh Sharma, chief executive officer, TCoE India; and AK Mittal, director general, TSDSI. The speakers highlighted the strategic role of telecom standards in fostering innovation-led growth, enabling global competitiveness and strengthening India’s participation in international standards development.
A detailed technical session on 3GPP, oneM2M and TSDSI standardisation processes was delivered by TSDSI experts PK Jaswal and Dhivagar Baskaran from CEWiT. The session covered the organisational structure of 3GPP, the role of oneM2M in enabling interoperable IoT and machine-to-machine ecosystems, the standards development lifecycle and practical pathways for startups to participate and submit technical contributions, along with institutional support available through TSDSI.
The ITU-R and ITU-T standardisation frameworks were explained by Vineet Malik, director (radio) at TEC, DoT. He outlined the role of the International Telecommunication Union in spectrum management, telecom network standards and global regulatory coordination, and highlighted participation avenues available to Indian stakeholders.
An experience-sharing session was conducted by Sreenath Ramanath, founder of Lekha Wireless Solutions, who shared insights on engaging with standardisation bodies, initial challenges, ecosystem support received and the tangible benefits of contributing to global standards.
Speakers emphasised that technical contributions accepted by international standards bodies become part of globally recognised normative standards, which influence national regulations, licensing frameworks and operator procurement processes. Such participation, they noted, significantly enhances the global credibility and visibility of Indian innovators.
The webinar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, with participants encouraged to actively engage in future standardisation initiatives. DoT reiterated that standardisation is critical for interoperability, global market access, technology adoption and intellectual property creation, and reaffirmed its commitment to facilitate greater participation of Indian startups, academia and industry in global telecom standards ecosystems, particularly in emerging technologies aligned with the objectives of the Bharat 6G Mission.
