New Delhi, December 3: Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday said the Sanchar Saathi mobile application is “completely voluntary” and emphasised that users are free to activate, deactivate or delete the app at any time. The clarification follows concerns over whether the app is mandatory for mobile users.

Scindia said Sanchar Saathi has been developed as a citizen-first digital safety tool, enabling users to protect themselves from mobile fraud and misuse. Describing it as a transparent and privacy-safe platform, he noted that the initiative embodies the principle of Jan Bhaagidaari by encouraging active public participation in securing India’s digital ecosystem.

According to the ministry, Sanchar Saathi has recorded significant adoption and on-ground impact since its launch. Over 21.5 crore users have accessed the portal, while more than 1.4 crore have downloaded the app. Citizens have used the platform to disconnect 1.43 crore mobile numbers by reporting “Not My Number,” helping curb misuse of SIM cards.

The system has also helped trace 26 lakh lost or stolen mobile phones, with 7.23 lakh devices returned to their owners. Citizen-generated alerts have resulted in the disconnection of 40.96 lakh fraudulent mobile connections and the blocking of 6.2 lakh IMEIs linked to fraud and illegal activities. The Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) feature alone has prevented potential losses valued at ₹475 crore, the ministry said.

The platform allows users to report suspicious calls directly from their call logs, enabling real-time alerts and reducing risks for vulnerable consumers.

“Digital security for every citizen is our topmost priority,” Scindia said. “Sanchar Saathi is voluntary, transparent, and designed solely to protect India’s mobile users. Citizens have complete freedom to activate or delete the app whenever they wish, ensuring safety without compromising privacy.”

The ministry said it will continue strengthening tools that enhance consumer protection and reinforce India’s cybersecurity ecosystem.
