New Delhi, October 25: The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has announced that the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 will be held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, on October 30–31, to position India as a global leader in the rice supply chain and promote sustainability-driven trade practices.

Aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the conference aims to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and resilience in the global rice trade while showcasing India’s leadership in sustainable and rules-based commerce. Over 3,000 farmers, 1,000 foreign buyers from more than 80 countries, and 2,500 exporters and millers are expected to participate.

Global Delegation and Institutional Support

Foreign Ministers from the Philippines, Ghana, Namibia, and The Gambia will participate in the two-day event, which is being organized by the Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF) in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)PIB2182209. The event is supported by multiple ministries and state governments, including Odisha, Telangana, Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur, along with leading cooperative institutions such as NCEL, NCOL, BBSSL, and Kribhco.

Trade Opportunities and Policy Vision

BIRC 2025 is expected to unlock ₹1.80 lakh crore in new rice markets and facilitate the signing of ₹25,000 crore worth of export MoUs. The event will also unveil a Vision & Roadmap document outlining a sector-specific action plan to drive innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness in rice exports.

Eight technical sessions chaired by senior officers and domain experts will lay the foundation for this roadmap, which will be finalized over the next six months through consultations with stakeholders including ICAR and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

India’s Strength in Global Rice Trade

India produced nearly 150 million tonnes of rice in 2024–25, accounting for 28% of global output, with exports of 20.1 million metric tonnes valued at USD 12.95 billion to over 172 countries. The global rice industry, valued at around USD 330 billion, supports more than four billion people worldwide and employs about 150 million smallholder farmers.

Innovation, Sustainability, and AgriTech

A major attraction at the event will be India’s first AI-based rice sorting technology, capable of analyzing colour, shape, and grain structure simultaneously for greater precision and efficiency. The AgriTech Pavilion and the Women Entrepreneur, Startup, and MSME Pavilion will showcase innovations in seed development, traceability, digital marketplaces, and finance.

State Pavilions and Cooperative Launches

State and UT pavilions — including those from Telangana, Meghalaya, Assam, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and J&K — will highlight local rice varieties, sustainable practices, and export opportunities.

Bharat Organics, under National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), will launch its Organic Rice Range and Direct-to-Consumer platform, featuring single-origin varieties like Kala Namak (UP), Gobindobhog (WB), Black Rice (Manipur), and Red Matta (Kerala).

Strengthening India’s Export Ecosystem

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) will showcase its Trade Connect e-Platform, providing exporters with tools for certification, tariff data, and international buyer networking. A key highlight will be the signing of an MoU to establish an Incubation and Agricultural Research Centre in New Delhi, focused on sustainable and climate-resilient rice production.

BIRC 2025 will henceforth be held annually as a flagship global platform for policy dialogue, technology exchange, and trade facilitation across the rice value chain, reaffirming India’s leadership in the world food system.
